Across 25 states, unsubsidized 2027 premiums to jump another 14.5% on average

I'm exactly halfway through my annual state-by-state individual & small group health insurance market rate filing analysis project, so this seems like a good time to take a moment to check in and see where things stand overall.

As of today, I've compiled the preliminary 2027 rate filings for the ACA-compliant individual and small group markets across 25 states (including the District of Columbia). So far, the weighted average increases being requested range from as little as 6.5% in Vermont to as much as 22.9% in Alaska. Interestingly, both of these states already have some of the highest individual market premiums for unsubsidized enrollees in the nation...over $1,000 per month per enrollee.

Across all 25 states (which had a little over 7.3 million effectuated enrollees collectively), the premium increase being requested by carriers for 2027 averages around 14.5%. This means that unsubsidized enrollees will go from paying around $727/month for ACA healthcare coverage this year to $832/month apiece next year...an increase of $105 per month or $1,260 more per year each.

*Note: Minnesota's effectuated enrollee number only includes those enrolled on-exchange. Effectuated totals don't include some enrollees with plans from carriers which are exiting the ACA individual market in 2027.

This year I'm adding something new: the table below breaks out the average filings not only by state but also by individual carrier. Be warned, there's around 160 of them across these 25 states below. I'm gonna start tackling the other half of the states next, so stay tuned...
